Photoshop Elements Tips – How To Make A Two Tone Picture

Photoshop Elements is one of the best pieces of consumer-driven software which supports easy to use features to produce a ten-on-ten perfect photo. This program has given an immense boost to artists to create and test out various features to carve out a larger than life image.

These Photoshop Elements Tips reveal how its user friendly features have made tough tasks like correcting a blemished image, changing the background, improving the resolution of the photograph and now creating two different tones in one single photo, like child’s play.

With this new feature of making 2 tones in a single photo, the program gives you many different options to make your photo perfect.

The technique of making 2 tones in one photograph requires the conversion of a colored photograph into black & white with a special sepia effect. This effect improves the appeal of your image by rendering it a classic look. To change your picture into a 2 toned black and white image, follow the below pointers:

The first and foremost technique of modifying the tone of your colored image to black and white is by using the easy to access hue and saturation layer technique. This method totally de-saturates all of the livid colors in your image and changes it into a colorless black and white photo. Now, after getting the desired picture, it’s advisable to create a duplicate background and name it accordingly.

Next, you have to separate the shadows and highlights from your photo. To do this, go to the layers pallet and click on “create new fill” to choose “Threshold”. Choosing ‘Threshold’ will transform your photo into black & white. You’ll notice that an adjustment slider has also opened up. Now on the slider, keep changing your picture until you’re pleased with the separation of black and white quotient in the picture.

Now, you have to create around 2 hue and saturation layers. These will be two pictures, one being the inverse of the first one. Then click on the ‘magic wand’ tool to check if the tolerance is 100%. Now select the entire white portion on the photograph by hitting any white portion in your image. You may blend this white color a bit for better effects by choosing the option, “Feather” and converting its radius to 15px.

Now when you select the option, “create a new fill”, you’ll notice that a new layer opens up containing the mask that absolutely resembles your picture. Then, save this new layer by clicking ‘OK” and rename this layer as Highlights.

Select the option, “magic wand” for the last time and this time clicking on the black colored area in the image. You can feather selection once again to build another saturation layer. Just click ‘OK’ and save this new layer as ‘shadows’.

As the previous step, click on the ‘Threshold’ layer to turn it off, to open the adjustment layer labeled, ‘Highlights’. Select the color box and change hues until you’re happy, and also fix the saturation. Repeat the same steps for the Shadow layer, and you are done.
